Opening Ceremony XVI ICPC 2010


Trip to Berea, Kentucky
Busses will leave from the Lexington Center after the Opening Cermoney.


Lunch – Boone Tavern, Berea
Boone Tavern

The Boone Tavern is an historic hotel and restaurant prominently located on the College Square in Berea, Kentucky. The Tavern is built on the old “Dixie Highway” and named after the early Kentucky explorer, Daniel Boone. Boone Tavern has been in continuous operation since 1909 and continues it tradition of being staffed primarily by Berea College students.


Berea College


Berea College is a 1500 student body liberal arts college. Founded in 1855 by the abolitionist John Gregg Fee, Berea College admitted both black and white students in a fully integrated curriculum, making it the first nonsegregated, coeducational college in the South and one of handful of colleges/universities admitting both male and female students in the 1800’s.


Berea College has an $800,000,000 endowment and charges no tuition. Each student participates in a work - study program with students working at the Boone Tavern, in multiple crafts shops, etc. The college emphasis enrolling (1) lower income students from the Appalachian area, (2) ethnic minorities, and (3) foreign students from less developed countries (students from 60 different countries).


The multiple crafts (furniture, quilts, etc.) are sold in Berea, as well as in the Kentucky Artisan Center, the next tour stop on the return home.


Kentucky Artisan Center - Located near Berea, the Kentucky Artisan Center illustrates various crafts unique to the Southern Appalachians. Visitors can purchase a wide range of items unique to the Southern Appalachians.

Trip to Lexington Area Horse Farms
Buses will leave from the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort Hotel, the host hotel of XVI ICPC 2010.


Horse Farms
Horse Farm

For generations, Lexington has been known as the Horse Capital of the World. The area has the world’s largest concentration of horse farms, world-famous racing and training venues, and a historic relationship with Thoroughbreds that dates back to 1779. This trip will take you to multiple, immaculately manicured, horse farms. The trip will include some private showings of stallions.

Trip to the Lexington Fayette Mall
Buses will leave from the Marriott Griffin Gate at 9:30 am and will return to the Marriott Griffin Gate between 2:00 and 2:30 pm in time to prepare for the XVI ICPC 2010 Banquet at the Kentucky Horse Park.


Fayette Mall
The Fayette Mall is an indoor mall with over 120 stores and is the largest shopping mall in Lexington. The mall is ‘anchored’ by large Dillard’s, JC Penney, Macy’s, and Sears stores. The mall contains multiple smaller specialized stores including American Eagle, Limited, Eddie Baurer, The Disney Store, Abercrombie & Fitch, the Gap, and Gymboree.


Lunch
The Fayette Mall contains restaurants and a Food Court. Participants will be on their own for lunch recognizing the shorter duration of this trip due to the various events associated with the XVI ICPC 2010 Banquet at the Kentucky Horse Park.
